Types Of Levels Used In House And Building Construction

The base of the complex civil engineering industry is built on accuracy, from perfect vertical plumb walls to building strong foundations. Similarly, Levels in construction are essential when it comes to precision.

There are different types of levels, commonly used in house and building construction, and each serves various purposes to ensure safe and stable structures.

What are levels

Types of levels along with their roles, functions, and importance,
that you should know as a civil engineer or professional involved in the Construction Industry.

What are Levels?

Levels are used to find out the vertical alignment of the surface considering the reference point, typically gravity force. They help to ensure that surfaces are flat and even, thus it makes easy to construct strong and aesthetically appealing buildi
Different types of levels in House and Building Construction. (Definition, Function, and Importance)

Natural Ground Level (NGL):

Natural Ground level refers to the original ground level before the commencement of any construction activity.
Functions: To know the amount of excavation to be done for the foundation and basements depends on NGL. NGL acts as the foundation for all other level references at that construction site.
Importance: The accurate NGL helps in ensuring accurate drainage planning and foundation depth and also helps in the prevention of underground connection problems.

Building Ground Level (BGL):

The Level of land or the completed floor level inside the structure is known as the Building Ground Level.

The stature of the Building's Ground Level normally goes from 150mm to 1200mm, from the Natural Ground Level (NGL).
Importance: Accurate establishment of BGL helps to ensure the strength of structures and uneven settling
Functions: BGL acts as the building foundation and helps to find entrances like doorways and ramps.

Existing Ground Level (EGL):

Existing Ground Level refers to ground level at any construction site before the commencement of any construction activities.
Function: It acts as a point of reference to determine changes in terrain due to construction activities.
Importance: With the help of EGL, it is easier to design a foundation suitable for existing structures and keep correct drainage patterns.

Plinth Level (Plinth Height):

A-Level where the foundation closes and the superstructure begins is known as the plinth level. The plinth is a piece of the superstructure situated between the ground level and the completed floor level.

Functions:

The basic role of giving a plinth is to forestall the section of water and stormwater into the structure.

Importance:

It conveys a dead heap of block stonework built over it and assists in sending a heap of superstructure to the establishment, shielding the design from dampness and moistness and improving a structure's appearance.

Structural Slab Level (SSL):

The top surfaces of concrete slabs that make the floors and ceiling of a building are called Structural Slab levels.
Function: It transfers equal loads throughout structures and sustains the floor above it.
Importance: It ensures building strength and makes it easy to install utilities like plumbing and electrical wiring inside the depth of the slab and aids in accurate floor-to-ceiling heights throughout the building.

Structural Floor Level (SFL):

The term Structural Floor level refers to the finished floor level or floor screeding's (a leveling layer) top surface level including structural slabs.
Function: It assists in establishing a final walking level of all room surfaces and ensures easy installation of all finishes and utilities
Importance: The accurate SFL assists in ensuring uniform floor level in every room and removes additional unwanted steps and changes within the same floo

Floor Finish Level (FFL):

Function: The final walking ground level in a room is determined by FFL. It's the move-around area for individuals.
Importance: It helps to ensure the proper operations of doorways and passages between rooms with different floor finishes. Having uniform FFLs enhances the overall quality and appealing interior space.
