CAREER AS A STRUCTURAL ENGINEER:
Structural engineering is considered a specialized branch of civil engineering, but while civil engineers may design roadways, tunnels, dams, and bridges, a structural engineer ensures that specific architectural components such as beams, foundations, columns, and floors are structurally sound. In addition to public safety concerns, structural engineers must also take into account aesthetics and cost efficiency. They often specialize in the types of structures they design and may work on projects ranging from nuclear power plants to hotels.
Structural engineers must be analytical, detail-oriented, and creative, in addition to having strong interpersonal and communication skills. Proficiency with computer-aided drafting software applications integral to structural engineering, such as AutoCAD and RISA, is essential, as are excellent computer skills and familiarity with other commonly-used word processing and spreadsheet programs. Many employers require knowledge of construction management. Structural engineers must also be familiar with codes and regulations specific to the industry in which they specialize and possess up-to-date technical knowledge often obtained through continuing education.
Job Roles and Responsibilities of a Structural Engineer
1.The duties of a Structural Engineer depend on the structure he has to build. Working closely with clients, architects, building contractors, other engineers he has to perform the following duties-
2.He has to design different parts of the structure by using computer software.
3.He has to perform the task of drawings and make the framework of the different structures like buildings, bridges, tunnels, towers, etc.
4.In order to construct the building, he has to go through mathematical calculations accurately.
5.He has to select the construction materials and the appropriate proportions of the mortar that will be used to construct the particular building or structure.
6.A structural engineer has to maintain communication with the construction contractors and make sure that the different parts like piers, girders, deck slab of the newly constructed bridge and pillars, beams, RCC roof of the newly erected building are structurally sound.
7.He has to consult with different scientific experts and gather knowledge about how different forces of nature act on the built structure.
8.He has to employ Computer-aided design technology for a simulation to see different behaviors of the built structure under different environmental conditions.
9.Inspecting the damage caused to the building materials like steel, concrete, glass, etc. of an unsafe building and advising the contractors about the ways of improving the safety of the structure of the concerned building.
10.The structural engineer has to look after whether the building follows the legal guidelines, health & safety regulations as well as environmental rules.
Structural engineers make sure all our buildings and infrastructure are safe to use. Structural engineers can start their career as a construction designer and can further become project managers. One can seek employment in private section and public sector as well. With increasing urbanization and factors like climate change & energy efficiency, the demand for structural engineering will rise further. Professionals in Structural engineering play an important role in construction industry. They can also work as a self-employed contract engineer or as consultants. Most structural engineers work in engineering consultancies.
